Lizzie's Story

The first time I laid eyes on Lizzie she was at Charles Town Track finishing up a race. When I saw her come across the finish line and start trotting back down the track my heart start beating so fast. Something in me said "Oh my God, she's beautiful and I have to have her!" I started watching for her to race again and I was going to have a trainer claim her for me. The next race came up and I was off to the track to "claim" MY horse. I just knew I had to have her. My claim was put in and I awaited her to come across the finish line and she was MINE!!! She came sailing through the finish line and no claim came up on the board. I was quite puzzled and so was the trainer. We went back into the claiming office to find out..."Mark had forgot to place a dot over an I in the claim form." What? So we said OK we will do it next time and the next time came and the same thing happened. This time it was a "t" was not crossed properly...again wtf? Well, turns out the guy who owned and trained her was one of the "good ol boys" on the board at Charlestown at the time. So we knew his buddies were not ever going to let us claim his Lizzie! Well, as luck would have it, Charlestown track closed and for good reason. Thank god for all the horses training and racing there at the time. She went off to Penn National one night for a race. I had my Penn National Trainer on it for me to watch and wait for her to run...and she did. As luck would have it, I was in FL for the Christmas Holiday and I get a call...I've got your mare and she is on her way to Middleburg, VA to my farm! That was the best Christmas gift that year for me!!! Yahoo, Lizzie was finally mine! Well, when I got back to VA, I was told she has to be in race training since I claimed her for "racing." So she went to a farm of a friend of mine in Maryland for "race training", yeah right!
Small side note, Lizzie as blinded prior to my claiming her off the track by her caretakers at the time. They put a steroid eye ointment in her eye after a race and the eye had a scratch in it, so the eye was basically burnt up from the steroid and blinded her in one eye. She also had both jugular veins on both sides of her neck so ruined most experienced Vets could not get an IV in her due to DMSO Bombs as they were called at the track!!! So, I was very happy when I got her off the track. The poor girl had been through so much. It took years for her to trust humans when it came to any kind of shot, bath or even touching her legs. In the end, I could walk up and give her a shot while she eat her dinner loose in a stall or a paddock. Lizzie had a HUGE heart of gold!

Finally in the spring of 1995 she was bred to my stallion Norab for her first foal. She was a wonderful broodmare with every single foal. She did lose one to colic at 29 days old and she was so wonderful as the Vets worked on her foal for hours on end. She was looking over her baby to make sure we were doing it right. In the end we had to put the foal down. Lizzie stood quietly over her foal for hours once he was put down. She even was allowed to come when we buried him in the field where she was. She stood over his grave for days, it was so sad. I had to bring water to her and feed her there. She finally went on with life and happily had a foal the next year.

This past spring when Mz. Blonde was foaling, she was coming out up side down. Lizzie had a very stressful delivery, and foundered 2 days later after foaling. She fought the founder for months, we had her on the mend when for no real reason she foundered again and had an abscess. I was so relieved to find an abscess, but in the end the founder was back and worst than the first round. With in 10 days of the second on set of founder, her kidneys shut down and she became toxic and neurological and had to be put down. The night before she had to be put down the next morning she stood all night over her filly and would not even lay down to rest herself. Lizzie was very dedicated to all of her foals and will be GREATLY missed here at Norsire Farm!

I would like to nominate this wonderful mare for all her courage, her temerity, and for all the wonderful foals she had. Not to mention all the joy and happiness her babies have bought to all the people who are lucky enough to have one!

I would like to nominate my mare Lizzie whom is recently deceased. I will write more later but wanted to post her offspring here first. She never missed a year being in foal or having a foal except for one year when the Vet "pinched the twin" which turned out to be the embryo and the other twin was a cyst. I have photos of all of them but one and he was John Wayne's Gold by Gold Card born in 1998. He was sold the day he was born to a very nice lady in FL who then moved to Maine and he is now in CA with her..he did dressage with her.
